Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, it's all about Streets of New Capenna. The main set is fully previewed, many of the commander precon cards have leaked, and the set is sending shockwaves through the Magic market. One of the biggest winners this week was Scarblade Elite, which was bought out almost as soon as Mari, the Killing Quill (extended) was previewed, going from a literal bulk rare to near $20 retail. If this price jump sounds absurd, it is. If you look at completed listings, no one is buying Scarblade Elite for more than $6, which is still a huge increase from $0.50, but nowhere near the TCG-mid asking price. Expect prices to normalize in the coming days as more supply hits the market. While Scarblade Elite won't drop back down to bulk, settling somewhere around $5 seems likely.
Did you notice the price of some notorious bad cards like Eater of Days and Hellcarver Demon spike this week by hundreds or even thousands of% and wonder why? The answer is that a new legend called The Beamtown Bullies was unofficially spoiled on some Commander precon packaging. The card forces an opponent to reanimate a creature from your graveyard and goads it. Due to its unofficial nature, the card has flown under the radar as bit as people wait for Streets of New Capenna Commander spoilers to start next week, but it didn't take long for MTG finance to buy up pretty much anything with a hugely negative enters the battlefield trigger. There are two big lessons here. First, while official previews are great, the Magic market doesn't wait for official previews. If you're trying to play the game as inexpensively as possible, keeping up on leaks and other unofficial previews is essential. Second, buy and hold cards that have unique effects no matter how bad that effect might be, because it's likely only a matter of time until the right legend comes along to give these cards a home.
Finally, Time Sieve shot up more than 200% this week thanks to the printing of Bootleggers' Stash. The new mythic artifact offers an easy two-card infinite turn combo with the Alara Reborn rare. With five or more lands on the battlefield, you can simply tap your lands to make five Treasures, sacrifice them to Time Sieve to take an extra turn, and then repeat this process during the extra turn, giving you infinite turns to figure out a way to win the game. Thankfully Time Sieve has been reprinted multiple times recently, once in Double Masters and one in Mystery Boosters, so it's still floating around in the $10 range even post-spike, although if the combo manages to take off in a 60 card format or sees heavy play in Commander, the price could keep ticking up in the coming weeks and months.
