Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of Magic finance, the biggest winner was Streets of New Capenna rare Ledger Shredder which jumped a massive 758% from nearly bulk rare prices to just under $9, making it the most expensive non-land rare in the set. While the buyout may have started because of some hype posts on the MTGFinance Reddit, over the past few days the Bird has posted several finishes in Pioneer, showing up as a four-of in Esper Greasefang and in some Jeskai Ascendancy builds, and is seeing some Modern play as well. While Ledger Shredder maybe have been underrated (and under priced) during preview season, I'd still lean towards selling or trading away my copies now. Out of all eight sets in Standard, Ledger Shredder is currently the only non-land rare that costs $9 or more. Even if it's great, it seems unlikely it will be able to maintain its current price while Streets of New Capenna is being actively opened.
Meanwhile, the original printings of the shocklands are on the rise, lead by Hallowed Fountain with the Dissension printing jumping 56% to $47.50 on the week with Steam Vents and Breeding Pool also ticking up. Generally speaking, the first printing of a Modern-legal card doesn't really command much of a premium. In most cases the first printing ends up costing about the same, or sometimes even less, than something like a Masters set reprint. But shocklands are apparently an exception to this rule. Considering that you can get the Ravnica Allegiance version of Hallowed Fountain for just $13, it seems that players or collectors are willing to pay a huge premium to get the first printing with original art. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues and carries over to other cards, or if shocklands are unique thanks to their iconic nature and the heavy amount of play they see across formats.
Finally, Angels got a bump this week thanks to the printing of Giada, Font of Hope which has emerged as the second most popular new commander from Streets of New Capenna behind Jetmir, Nexus of Revels. As a result, tribe members including Lyra Dawnbringer, Gisela, the Broken Blade, Angel of Jubilation, Archangel of Thune, Resplendent Angel and honorary Angel Bishop of Wings all increased by between 7% and 23%. My guess is that the Angel hype will be short lived. We're only a week away from the official start of Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate spoilers which is likely to offer a ton of exciting new legends, potentially overshadowing Giada, Font of Hope and the rest of Streets of New Capenna. While it's hard to imagine these random Angels going too much higher, it is possible that we'll see some Streets of New Capenna cards end up fairly expensive long term if everyone moves on to Commander Legends II and stops opening New Capenna, potentially leaving the set light on supply compared to other recent premium sets.
