Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Hazoret the Fervent Combat Celebrant Lion's Eye Diamond

The biggest finance news of the week was the release of the Challenger Decks on Friday. While many of the chase cards are ticking down as more supply enters the market, all of the decks represent good value compared to buying the cards as singles. However, while retail prices have stayed fairly strong, buylist prices have tanked, which means it's unlikely you'll be able to flip any of the Challenger Decks for an immediate profit. This is probably a good thing since it will keep the decks on the shelves for players to enjoy some cheap Standard over the summer.

Speaking of Standard, things have been mostly quiet, although a handful of cards have seen gains based on synergy with some of the new cards coming in Dominaria. For example, Combat Celebrant (up 18% to $2.62) goes infinite with Helm of the Host, and even if the combo isn't competitive, it's fun (and cheap) enough that players will pick up copies to try it out at FNM. As the rest of Dominaria spoilers roll out this week, keep an eye out for these combos and synergies. If you identify them early, you can often pick up the copies of the cards you need before they increase as other players buy in.

In Legacy, Lion's Eye Diamond nearly doubled in price this week to about $250. While a lot of the Reserved List buyouts we've talked about recently don't really impact players because they don't see heavy play, Lion's Eye Diamond is one Reserved List card that is actually a Legacy staple. While the artifact will probably come back down a bit in the coming weeks, buylist prices today are about where retail prices were a couple months ago, so it will likely be a long time before Lion's Eye Diamond hits $150 again, if it ever does.
